Applications must be received by Phoenix Opera between October 1 and December 1, 2016. No
exceptions. Only 40 applicants and 10 alternates will be accepted and processed on a first come first,
served basis. First place winners of Phoenix Opera’s previous Southwest Vocal Competitions are
ineligible to apply. All applicants and alternates will receive notification and official invitation to
compete in the Southwest Vocal Competition via e-mail on December 5, 2016.

Forty applicants will be invited to compete in Round One of the Southwest Vocal Competition on
Saturday, January 28, 2017 and sing one opera aria of their own choosing in its original language.
Twenty contestants from the first round will be invited to compete in Round Two of the competition onSunday, January 29, 2017 and sing two opera arias in their original language (the first of their own
choosing and the second chosen by the Judges from the applicant’s itemized list of five arias). All
applicants are invited to attend the Master Class after this round. The names of the Ten Finalists will be
announced at the end of the Master Class.
Ten Finalists from Round Two will be invited to perform in a Finals Concert under the baton of Maestro
John Massaro with the Phoenix Opera Orchestra on Sunday, March 5, 2017, at the Orpheum Theatre in
Phoenix, Arizona. Finalists will compete for cash prizes and sing two arias (the first of their own
choosing and the second chosen by Phoenix Opera from the applicant’s itemized list of five arias).
Both preliminary Rounds and the Master Class are open to the general public (free of charge) and will be
conducted at Mayo Clinic’s Taylor Auditorium in Scottsdale, Arizona. Phoenix Opera will notify
applicants of the time for each Round and the Master Class upon acceptance of their application.
PREPARATION FOR THE FINALS CONCERT
Each Finalist will rehearse with Maestro John Massaro and the Phoenix Opera Orchestra in preparation
for the Finals Concert. The rehearsal schedule will be announced after the Master Class on Sunday,
January 29, 2017 after the Master Class.

PRIZES AND AWARD CEREMONY*
Each Finalist will compete for fabulous cash prizes in the Finals Concert. Winners will be announced
from the stage immediately following the competition. Cash prizes will be awarded as follows:

NOTE: If the Finalists selected to receive one of the top cash awards are all of the same gender, only one First
Place Cash Prize of $10,000 will be awarded. Finalists who are not selected for a top cash prize will each receive a
$500 cash award for their participation in the Southwest Vocal Competition.
The Southwest Vocal Competition will be adjudicated by a distinguished panel of independent judges
comprised of Agents, General Directors, Conductors, Noted Singers and Voice Teachers.
Singers will be scored on a scale of 1 to 10 (ten being highest, one being lowest) in each of the
following categories based on individual merit not competitively against one another. Only the singers
receiving the highest score will advance to the next round. In the case of a tie score, the judges will
deliberate and break the tie. Twenty singers from the first round will be invited to compete in Round
Two of the competition. Ten finalists from the second round will be invited to perform in the Finals Concert. The decisions of the judges are final.
The i will be electronically calibrated by DB Sound Meter of audience response
to each Finalist’s performance during the Finals Concert.
Judges will critique and present contestants with positive feedback for self-improvement and personal
development throughout the competition and the Master Class.
*THE FINE PRINT
Notification, Withdrawal, Disqualification and Refunds: Applications will be processed on a first come, first served basis upon
submission and receipt of the required $40.00 registration fee. Phoenix Opera will acknowledge receipt of applications via e-
mail. Applicant will receive a separate e-mail notification of acceptance and a formal invitation to compete in the competition
upon validation of their registration fee and verification of their eligibility criteria. If applicant qualifies as an alternate and
ultimately does not compete in the competition, applicant’s entire registration fee will be refunded after the first round of the
competition. Phoenix Opera reserves the right to reject any application for insufficient funds or non-payment of the required
registration fee; for failure to submit a complete application and required documentation, or for falsification of application
data. Applicant may elect to withdraw from the competition giving a minimum 14-day notice to withdraw, prior to the first
round of the competition. Notification of an applicant’s intent to withdraw from the competition must be submitted to Phoenix
Opera via e-mail within this specified time period to receive a full refund of their registration fee. If notification is received
after the specified time period, applicant shall forfeit their entire registration fee. Applicants who falsify application data will
forfeit their entire registration fee and shall be disqualified from participation in the Southwest Vocal Competition.
Accompanist, Master Class and Final Concert: Phoenix Opera will provide piano accompaniment for each applicant during
Round One and Round Two of the Southwest Vocal Competition. All applicants in the competition are invited to attend the
Master Class on Sunday, January 29, 2017. All applicants participating in the competition will receive two free admission tickets
to the Finals Concert on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Phoenix. All finalists will rehearse and
perform with the Phoenix Opera Orchestra under the baton of Maestro John Massaro.
Indemnification: Participation in the Southwest Vocal Competition is voluntary. While Phoenix Opera will make every effort to
safeguard the security, processing, and transmission of all online applications in a timely and judicious manner, it shall be held
harmless and assumes no liability for lost, corrupt, undelivered or misdirected applications that may occur due to conditions
caused by the internet and e-mail service providers beyond its control. Should the loss, non-transmission or misdirection of a
processed application occur, Phoenix Opera will attempt to recover said application or refund applicant’s total registration fee.
All decisions of the judges are final, independent and free of any direct or indirect influence by Phoenix Opera; its staff,
sponsors and benefactors. Applicants; applicant families, friends and agents explicitly and unconditionally agree to hold Phoenix
Opera; its staff, sponsors and benefactors harmless for any decision of the Judges, including but not limited to opera aria
selection and scoring that may affect their advancement and standing in the Southwest Vocal Competition. Applicant’s
participation in the Southwest Vocal Competition does not and shall not be construed as an audition for any role in any opera
or theatre production by Phoenix Opera or the Judges.
Image Release: Applicant hereby acknowledges that their name, picture, voice, video, likeness and any information related to
their participation in the Southwest Vocal Competition, albeit from the Preliminary Rounds or Finals Concert, whether the
foregoing is captured by photograph, videotape, audiotape or any other recording (collectively “image”) may be used for
promotional purposes by Phoenix Opera and its successors, assigns, sponsors, licensees, affiliates, media-partners and
employees (collectively “grantees”). Applicant hereby grants an exclusive, irrevocable, perpetual and worldwide right to
Phoenix Opera and grantees to use, reproduce, publish, exhibit, distribute and transmit their image in any media, including but
not limited to print, radio, television, film, internet, DVD and CD-ROM. Applicant herein waives the right to inspect or approve
production of such media that may incorporate their image. Applicant understands and hereby accepts that they will receive no
compensation in connection with the use of their image and without condition hereby releases Phoenix Opera and grantees
from any liability, damages, or claims resulting from such use, including but not limited to claims for libel or invasion of privacy.
Applicant acknowledges and hereby agrees that the terms of this image release are binding on their releasors, assigns, and legal
